Today’s Assignment

Yes, you’ve probably heard this song.  Yes, it was made popular by an American Idol contestant a few years ago.  Yes it makes me sad that I had not heard it until then.  And yes, it’s now on the latest Shrek soundtrack.  But do me a favor and emerge yourself in all this song has to offer by watching this:  Hallelujah (Performed by Rufus Wainwright) while reading along to these:

Hallelujah (Lyrics by Leonard Cohen)

I’ve heard there was a secret chord
That David played, and it pleased the Lord
But you don’t really care for music, do you?
It goes like this
The fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty in the moonlight overthrew you
She tied you to a kitchen chair
She broke your throne, she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Maybe I’ve been here before
I know this room, I’ve walked this floor
I used to live alone before I knew you
I’ve seen your flag on the marble arch
love is not a victory march
It’s a cold and it’s a broken hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

There was a time you’d let me know
What’s real and going on below
But now you never show it to me do you?
Remember when I moved in you?
The holy dark was moving too (ed note:  I’ve seen lyrics where the holy dark was referred to as the Holy Dove.)
And every breath we drew was hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Maybe there’s a God above
And all I ever learned from love
Was how to shoot at someone who outdrew you
It’s not a cry you can hear at night
It’s not somebody who’s seen the light
It’s a cold and it’s a broken hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

OK, the floor is now open for discussion.  Who wants to begin?

Have you heard Brandie Carlile’s version? It’s incredible. She used to listen to Jeff Buckley’s version when she was growing up.

Also Jump, Little Children’s, Jay Clifford does a decent cover if you ask me, but what do you expect from a Jay Girl like me?

What?! Brandi? As in, Her-Voice-Breaks-My-Heart, Brandi? I’m off to find it…
(And thank you for sharing this video. It’s the first time I’ve heard someone do the harmony for this song.)
